Count holiday days, not just nights away

Reviewed 13 October 2026

A simple way to compare an island trip is to work backwards from the time you will actually enjoy there.

Two trips with the same number of nights can deliver very different amounts of useful time. Before choosing a destination, place the complete journey on a calendar: leaving home, getting to the airport, arriving, reaching the accommodation and doing the reverse on the way back.

Find the real first day

Do not count an arrival date as a full holiday day by default. Think about the arrival time, the onward journey and how much energy your party is likely to have. Make the first plan modest enough that a delay does not undo the rest of the trip.

Compare whole itineraries

Create two columns for your leading options. Record the flight arrangements, accommodation nights, onward transport and any fixed-time activity. For an island transfer, ask who is responsible for coordinating it with the flight. Compare these details alongside cost rather than making each booking in isolation.

Protect the experience that matters

Choose one priority: a particular place, an outing or simply uninterrupted time together. Build around it. Leave an alternative for anything dependent on weather or a limited booking, and avoid making every day non-refundable.

Use a final question

Would you still want the trip if one excursion changed? If the answer is no, revisit the plan before paying. A useful itinerary gives you something to look forward to without requiring every connection and every hour to unfold perfectly.

This is BEST TRAVELS’ planning method, not a promise about journey times or a recommendation of a specific flight.
