Zermatt’s Hinterdorf: a village walk through Alpine history

Timber and stone buildings along Hinterdorfstrasse in Zermatt

Zermatt rewards a closer look at village level. In the Hinterdorf, narrow lanes thread between timber buildings and stone foundations, offering a different perspective on a destination often pictured through its mountains. This is a walk for noticing construction, textures and the practical details of Alpine life.

The local tourism board identifies more than 30 traditional buildings in the old village, including barns, stores, stables and homes dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Their appeal lies in the ensemble: the tight spaces between buildings are as much a part of the scene as any individual facade.

One useful approach is through the Englischer Viertel, behind Bahnhofstrasse. The lane leads from the church area past the rear of the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof towards the Inderbinen fountain. From the fountain, a lane on the left reaches the old village. Check the local map before setting out rather than treating this short description as turn-by-turn navigation.

Look for agricultural buildings raised on supports with flat stone slabs. The slabs helped keep mice away from stored provisions. This small construction detail gives the walk a focus beyond collecting attractive photographs: the buildings were designed to solve everyday problems.

Our suggestion is to leave an unhurried gap in your village day for this area. Stay on public routes, keep entrances clear and photograph the architecture without intruding into private homes. Narrow lanes are not a promise of step-free access; visitors with mobility requirements should confirm a suitable route with the local tourism office.

Zermatt is car-free. If arriving by car, plan the transfer from Täsch before you travel; the tourism board lists a shuttle rail journey of approximately 12 minutes. Check the service for your travel date and ask your accommodation about the final transfer with luggage.
