Valletta: a small capital with room for a full day

Valletta’s compact size can be misleading. Malta’s capital occupies a fortified peninsula, with a street grid laid across hilly ground and water shaping the view on either side. A short distance on the map can contain a surprising amount of architecture.
UNESCO records 320 monuments within 55 hectares. Rather than trying to collect them all, choose one interior visit and leave the rest of the day for streets, façades and harbour outlooks. The city’s relationship with the Knights of St John is visible in its defensive walls as well as its grand buildings.
Plan for slopes and steps, and give yourself time to turn away from the main thoroughfares. A slow walk lets the proportions of doorways, balconies and streets become part of the visit. Valletta works best when its density is an invitation to look closely, not a reason to hurry.
