Swiss rail: the ticket, the seat and the view
A beautiful rail itinerary begins with a few practical distinctions. The right to travel and a reservation for a particular seat are not always the same thing. Understanding the difference makes it easier to plan a Swiss journey with confidence and enjoy the scenery once you are on board.
Separate the fare from the reservation
Switzerland Tourism says most Swiss trains do not require seat reservations, while panoramic services such as the Glacier Express and Bernina Express generally involve a reservation and/or additional charge. Check the precise train you intend to use. Do not assume that possession of a pass automatically completes every part of the booking.
Build around the essential journey
Choose the rail experience that matters most, verify its operating dates and reservation arrangements, then organise accommodation around a workable departure. Our recommendation is to prioritise a comfortable connection over squeezing another stop into the morning. A scenic journey is more enjoyable when boarding is not the end of a stressful race.
