Prague: cross Charles Bridge without rushing the view

Prague

Charles Bridge is more rewarding as a connection between neighbourhoods than as a single stop. Cross the Vltava slowly, noticing how the bridge towers frame the city and how the skyline changes as you move towards Malá Strana.

Prague’s official heritage guide traces construction to 1357 and describes the bridge’s remarkable collection of sculptures. You do not need to identify every figure to enjoy the walk. Choose a few details, then look back towards the bank you have just left.

Continue into the surrounding streets instead of turning immediately for another photograph. An unhurried crossing, a short neighbourhood walk and a café stop make a manageable first encounter with the city. Keep room in the itinerary for crowds and weather, and remember that atmospheric river views are available from the banks as well as from the bridge.
