Porto: follow the Douro towards the Atlantic

At Foz, Porto opens towards the Atlantic. The riverfront gives way to a coast of promenades, beaches and broad sea views, making this a different afternoon from the steep streets around the historic centre.
Begin around Passeio Alegre, near the mouth of the Douro. Its late-nineteenth-century garden includes an avenue of palms, a granite fountain and stone obelisks. The sheltered garden setting is a useful contrast to the more exposed waterfront.
Continue along the seafront for as long as the weather and your energy allow. This is an invitation to explore the river mouth and coast, not a timed route that requires every landmark. Allow space for a café stop and for watching the changing light on the water.
Atlantic conditions determine the experience. When waves are high, enjoy the view from safe shore-side areas, follow local warnings and stay away from exposed breakwaters. Check the forecast and your return transport before leaving the centre; a coastal afternoon does not need to become a beach day.
