Paris: follow the Seine through the city’s layers

Paris

The Seine gives Paris a thread to follow. Instead of moving between monuments as isolated appointments, walk a section of the river and watch different periods of the city appear together: islands, bridges, palace façades and long views towards later landmarks.

UNESCO’s recognised riverfront includes the historic stretch between Pont de Sully and Pont d’Iéna, along with Île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis. The distinction is useful: this is a connected urban landscape, not simply a collection of famous buildings.

For a focused outing, begin around the islands and continue towards Pont Neuf. Cross a bridge when the opposite bank offers a different perspective, then pause to notice the quays and façades that give the river its structure. There is no need to cover the entire recognised stretch in one walk.

Choose one interior visit to complement the route and check its own booking arrangements separately. The river walk supplies the context: a chance to understand how the Paris of postcards fits into a city built and rebuilt over centuries.
