Oaxaca: make space for the city and Monte Albán

Oaxaca offers two different scales of discovery. In the historic centre, streets and squares invite close attention to buildings and daily life. At Monte Albán, the landscape opens out around a major archaeological site.
UNESCO recognises the historic centre and Monte Albán together. Its account connects the city’s grid and substantial buildings with the terraces, platforms and monumental remains on the nearby mountain. They reward different kinds of attention, so neither needs to be reduced to a brief stop.
Consider giving each its own generous part of the itinerary rather than fitting both around another excursion. Check access and transport arrangements for the archaeological visit, and leave time to explore the city on foot. The value of the combination is in discovering how different these two settings feel.
