Le Morne: the history behind a Mauritius landscape

Le Morne is one of Mauritius’s most distinctive coastal landmarks, but its importance reaches far beyond the view. The mountain and its surroundings hold a history that deserves attention alongside the island’s beaches.
UNESCO recognises Le Morne as a cultural landscape associated with resistance to slavery. People escaping enslavement found refuge in its difficult terrain during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The site remains a symbol of freedom, suffering and memory.
Make room for that context in a visit. Read the interpretation available locally and approach the landscape as a place of remembrance as well as natural beauty. If you plan to walk, check the current authorised route and conditions rather than assuming the whole mountain is a casual stroll. Understanding the place changes the way you look at it.
