Lucerne: make the river your starting point

Lucerne: make the river your starting point

Lucerne lends itself to a first day with a simple plan: begin by the Reuss, cross the Chapel Bridge and explore the old town before deciding how much more to add. The covered wooden bridge and neighbouring water tower give the walk a clear starting point.

Look up at the paintings as you cross, then slow down among the old town’s squares and painted façades. Switzerland Tourism highlights Weinmarkt and the riverside Town Hall Quay among the places to explore. You do not need to turn every landmark into a separate appointment.

Continue towards Lake Lucerne if you want a change of scale. The lakefront near the railway station offers a natural transition from enclosed streets to open water. Keep a mountain excursion or boat journey as a separate choice, with its own timetable and weather check.

Wear footwear suited to the old town’s paved surfaces and check access for any attraction you intend to enter. The water tower is a landmark to admire from outside, not a public viewing tower. A relaxed riverside meal can be a perfectly good finish to the day.
