Ljubljana: follow the river through the old town

Begin in Prešeren Square, where the pink Franciscan Church and Triple Bridge give Ljubljana an instantly recognisable meeting point. Cross towards the old town and keep the river as your reference, rather than trying to see the whole city in one morning.
Jože Plečnik’s Central Market and the nearby Dragon Bridge make natural stops. Continue towards Town Square for the Town Hall and Robba Fountain, then let Stari trg lead you further into the historic streets. This is a suggested independent walk, with room to shorten it whenever you find somewhere you would rather linger.
A pause beside the Ljubljanica belongs in the plan. Petkovšek Embankment offers places to sit; the riverside promenade at Breg gives you another way to enjoy the water. Choose one bank for the outward walk and cross back when the view invites you.
Check the weather and any venues you intend to enter before setting out. Market activity, café opening and individual attractions have their own hours. Keep the route flexible: the pleasure here is the sequence of bridges, squares and riverside views, not a race between them.
