Lisbon: a shorter walk through Alfama, with time to stop

Alfama is a place to explore in small sections. Lisbon’s older hillside streets combine cobbles, steps and steep inclines, so a route that looks short on a map can feel considerably longer on foot.
Use Santa Luzia as a focal point rather than collecting every viewpoint in one outing. Its decorative tiles and outlook over the neighbourhood give you reasons to pause before continuing towards Portas do Sol. Lisbon’s tourism board recommends discovering this part of the city gradually.
Choose a modest route, wear shoes with grip and leave time for a seated break. If steps are difficult, check the precise approach rather than relying on the distance alone. The aim is to notice doors, tiled surfaces and glimpses of the Tagus, not to finish a demanding checklist.
