Istanbul: make a ferry crossing part of the day

Istanbul’s waterfront makes more sense from the water. A ferry crossing changes the scale of the city, bringing its hills, domes and busy shores into one moving panorama. It also gives a practical journey a sense of occasion.

The municipal operator Şehir Hatları lists routes linking places such as Kadıköy, Karaköy, Eminönü and Beşiktaş. Its regular crossings and dedicated Bosphorus tours are different services. Choose the route for the neighbourhood you want to reach, rather than assuming every boat follows the same sightseeing circuit.

Leave space to explore at the other end. Check the current timetable, departure pier and return options before setting out, especially if another reservation follows. Sit where you can enjoy the changing view without blocking boarding areas. The most memorable part may be the ordinary movement of the city around you.
