Hoi An: read the trading town in its streets

Hoi An’s appeal goes beyond its evening lights. The layout of the old town tells the story of a trading port, with streets, timber-framed buildings and river connections shaped by centuries of exchange.
UNESCO describes a particularly well-preserved port active from the 15th to the 19th century. Local traditions met Chinese, Japanese and later European influences here. Looking at the buildings as working houses and places of trade adds depth to a walk through the town.
Give yourself a daylight visit as well as any evening outing. Look at rooflines, doorways and the relationship between streets and water before deciding where to linger. Check local conditions before travelling and respect homes and businesses when taking photographs. A quieter, observant walk offers more than treating the town as a backdrop for lantern pictures.
