Edinburgh: discover why the Old and New Towns belong together

Edinburgh’s character comes from a contrast that is worth walking slowly. The Old Town follows its dramatic ridge, while the New Town introduces a more ordered pattern of streets and neoclassical buildings.
UNESCO recognises the two areas together, rather than treating one as a supporting act for the other. That is a useful cue for planning: give each a place in the day and notice how the spaces between buildings change as you move.
Choose a manageable section of the Old Town, pause, then explore part of the New Town without trying to cover every landmark. Allow for slopes and changeable weather. A café or museum stop can turn a wet spell into a useful break. The contrast between dense lanes and broader planned streets makes the city memorable even when the sky refuses to cooperate.
