Douro by train: check the November changes first

Terraced vineyards and a river winding between steep hills make the Douro railway a tempting part of a northern Portugal trip. But anyone planning a journey this autumn or winter should start with the service notice, before choosing a lunch reservation or a return time.

CP says trains between Marco de Canaveses and Régua will be suspended from 3 November 2026 to 24 March 2027 for modernisation works. Replacement arrangements include direct buses between Caíde and Régua and stopping buses between Marco de Canaveses and Régua. Allow for a different journey, not an uninterrupted train ride from Porto.

The railway continues through a landscape that changes as you head towards Pinhão, Tua and Pocinho. Choose the stretch you most want to experience, then work backwards from the current connections. Keep any winery visit or meal comfortably clear of your return departure.

CP warns that replacement-bus times can vary with traffic and weather, and that these buses cannot carry wheelchairs, bicycles or scooters. If that affects your plans, contact the operator before booking. Check the timetable for your exact travel date and distinguish regular services from the separately operated Douro Historical Train.
